My hometown is on an island five miles long and about a mile wide.

Once the summer season was over, you’d be hard-pressed to find an operating traffic light.

For a long time, there were no fast-food joints and most of the local places were closed off-season–not that my family went out to eat.

Back then, my bicycle was my primary source of transportation and the 7-11 at the end of the island wasn’t just a destination, it was Shangri-La for my friends and me.

So, yes, free Slurpee Day means something to me. More than most official holidays.

Even if I don’t get my freebie today.

Enjoy.

Especially if you are on a bike.

And 10-years-old.
