Some morning-after reflections on the Tony Awards broadcast.
1. A good show for a not-very-exciting Broadway season.
2. Only show I saw that was nominated was Liberation and happy to see it take home a prize.
3. Glad that we didn’t hear applause during the in memoriam segment. Hate when that turns into a popularity contest.
4. They had to have known that the Ariana DeBose segment wasn’t working. That crap should be cut after the dress rehearsal. Tough love. Ditto the lame “speaking freely” segment.
5. I’ve loved Becky Shaw since seeing its premiere at the 2008 Humana Festival. Glad to see it get some love. (Side note: I really miss the Humana Festival)
6. The “tribute” to A Chorus Line was less of a tribute and more of a passionless college talent night performance. Couldn’t they at least have shown clips or acknowledged all the people in the audience who were in the show at some point? Something.
7. Is there now any chance of Schmig getting the already written third season filmed?
8. I love Ragtime but the one category I guessed wrong on was Musical Revival. I thought it was about celebrating creative reinvention rather than just awarding the best on-paper material. Seemed to be Cats’ year.
9. Would have been nice of the regional theater award was presented during the broadcast. The audience for the show extends beyond NYC and it’s one of the only chances to acknowledge that.
10. Good timing for Indy’s Summer Stock Stage, which is presenting its version of Ragtime this month.
11. I wish Julia Louis Dreyfus was coming to B’way next season in something more interesting than Other Desert Cities. It’s an okay play but there are other more interesting options out there.
12. Still waiting for something to be announced for the 2026-27 season that I’m excited about. For me, right now, the only “gotta see” is the latest Apple Family play from Richard Nelson off-Broadway. Is anything on your NYC theater radar?
