I’ve been told by more than one person that it’s not easy to find out what projects I’m involved in — even in this website with my own name in the address.
I’m going to try to be better. Starting now.
Here we go:
THEATER
My play “The Egg” had a strong run the Indy Fringe Festival thanks in large part to the acting talents of Michelle Wafford and Beverly Roche. We’ve been offered an opportunity to present it again as part of the PROOF Literary Festival at the Harrison Center in Indianapolis. It’s happening Oct. 11 and will be followed by a discussion about how this and other theatrical work evolves from idea to performance. The next Wildwood-set play is in the works. Stay tuned.
On Sept. 24, SiteLines Indy — one of my ongoing partnership projects with John Thomas — will be presenting an outdoor reading of Mark St. Germain’s play “Camping with Henry and Tom.” This one, which I’m directing, is not open to the public. It’s a private event in partnership with the Indiana Land Trust. As we have done with partners including the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Chatterbox jazz club, Gallery 924, WFYI, the Indiana Historical Society and others, SiteLines finds an outstanding play that speaks to a core interest of each partner. We then offer, in an appropriate location, a reading or full production of the piece with top local actors. It is up to our partners if they want it to be a private event or open to the public and whether it is free or have a ticket price. We love this unique program and would be happy to share more info and discuss possible projects with interested groups.
Every second Wednesday of the month, the public is invited to Indy Actors’ Playground at Indy Reads bookstore. Actors are usually at the mercy of directors, casting folks etc. when it comes to the parts they get to play. IAP changes that. Each month, a professional actor from town gets to select a play they have a burn to do. They cast it and audiences are invited to hear these passion projects. More than 120 readings later, the series continues to offer theatrical bliss to actors and the public. Check out IAP’s Facebook page for updates (although we never announce what the play will be).
Another long-running project I work on with John Thomas (under our Two First Names Productions banner) is “Going…Going…Gone: The Live AUCTION Comedy”, which has entertained more than 100 audiences in four states. It’s a long-form improv show with heavy audience participation. We brought it back in August for a special one-nighter to help launch the 2025 Indy Fringe festival and are looking forward to introducing more audiences to the one-of-a-kind hilarity that comes from a visit to Ed’s Auction House. More info here.
OTHER WRITING
Recent stories in print have includes an A&E Season Preview for Crain’s New York Business and an Indianapolis theater fall preview for Mirror Indy. I also frequently write travel pieces for Indianapolis Monthly including recent and upcoming pieces on Niagara-on-the-Lake, Charleston WV, Chicago and Dollywood. Whenever possible I also contribute theater commentary here and to Theatrecriticism.com and film pieces to Midwest Film Journal.
GAMES AND TRIVIA
Game Night Social is now in its third year at the Garage Food Hall at Bottleworks. Each week I have about 70 titles from my extensive library of board and card games available to borrow and play for free. I serve as a sort of game concierge, helping folks find games that their group would enjoy, teaching them when helpful, and doing what I can to give folks a fun night out.
Game Reviews. In addition to reviewing games on this site, I also cover movie tie-in games for Midwest Film Journal and offer an annual review of non-intimidating games for other sites including Indianapolis Monthly.
Game Parties, Happy Hours, Etc. I’ve been hired by individuals and companies to host game events tailored to their groups. Reach out if you are interested.
On the first and third Sunday of every month. I host Real Fun Movie Trivia at Indianapolis’ Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. Featuring all original questions, it’s free, with prizes including movie and popcorn passes. Thanks to Kevin Cole and former Jeopardy champ Eric Berman who assist in writing questions and fill in on the rare occasion that I am out of town.
I also host trivia events for groups, also with original questions, including upcoming sessions as part of the Heartland Film Festival on October 12 and 19.
CONFERENCES
Maybe I’ll see you in October at the Society of Professional Journalists’ annual MediaFest in Washington D.C. (My full-time gig is with SPJ) and/or at the American Theatre Critics/Journalists Association annual conference in NYC in November — an event I am thrilled to help organize once again.
Sleeping
Yeah, I do that sometimes.
